They are literally toned down BECAUSE they’re too useful in combat. I believe it was the season 9 DVD (or was it season 8?) where Misha Collins himself addresses *exactly this*, by reviewing that Cas is in concept too OP and that’s why the authors nerf him in various ways and he understands that, because it’s HOW they manage to keep Cas around and keep him relevant without being able to Deus Ex Boopica all their problems away.
He’s already nerfed as an angel, I see no reason whatsoever to hold onto any of that when the point itself is that he can be useful and complete without them.
they’re not just talking about dean. they’re talking about each other. they’re talking about sam.
you know, honestly i don’t think sam really thought that was going to happen when they took jack in. he’d be a good mentor, a good role model, maybe be like an uncle figure. he knew he would teach him and guide him as well as keep him safe, but i think he thought it’d be like when he helps out claire.
somewhere along the way, jack became not just cas’s son. he became his, too. he became a son to all of team free will.
sam talking to cas about them having lost people before…. he wasn’t just talking about dean. he’s also talking about himself. “why does this hurt more than when everyone else died? why can’t i compartmentalize my emotions like the other times?” sam is trying to understand why he’s hurting this much as well.
as cas points out, losing your child suddenly is vastly different than losing a parent or a close friend. it’s unnatural. especially when that child has only been alive for such a short time.
so yeah i know some people choose to call sam jack’s uncle and i know they don’t mean anything by it (some have a reason i can empathize with), but i really think personally that “uncle” really doesn’t describe sam and jack’s relationship. it doesn’t really feel like it adequetely covers the depths of sam’s love for jack.
(on a side note, this whole episode made me think of a line from john q)
this moment about sam remembering jack’s birthday?
dean blanks completely and sam remembers exactly.
sam remembers for the same reason dean forgot: it was one of the worst days of their lives.
their mom is gone. their best friend was murdered. and they had what they thought was a scary powerful creature on the loose.
and what i think is amazing is that even though it was the worst day, it was the start of a significant and beautiful change in their lives.
The LOOK Dean gives Sam.. That’s…not just startled Sam is quick to name a date. Look at how Dean shoots a very hard stare. His face shuts off, it looks like Dean tenses up, even fight-or-flight mode for a split second. Why? Because Dean does remember That Date but not as Jack’s birthday. It’s the date Cas was murdered in front of his eyes. That’s, I think, what Dean’s mind goes to first when Cas says that date. Then when Sam explains it’s Jack’s birthday Dean relaxes.
yes EXACTLY. i didn’t add that deeper destiel analysis on this post because i was focusing on them becoming dads and jack and feels related to that but YES
“forgot” is the wrong word. dean didn’t forget. buried deep to try and forget, yes. but he never could. not for as long as he lives.
fr tho, anon, go be salty on your own blog and let us enjoy the nice things we’re getting for everyone.

I SHOULD BE SLEEPING BUT I HAD A THOUGHT AND NOW IT WONT LEAVE
so i was shutting down some negativity with a positive qt about this summary:
and i was being very “hey these bonds need a shot at forming too” (because they do and sam&cas deserve some bro time that isn’t centered around OMG WE NEED TO SAVE DEAN) when it dawned on me:
mary was paired up with sam when they split up and they talked about bobby and how she finds it hard to get him to open up cause walls
and what was she wearing?
and who ELSE do we know wears a tan coat, hmm?
me when i connected the dots
ME AN HOUR LATER AFTER IT PROCESSED:
YALL
like imagine
cas and sam are in the car driving home. sam checks in with cas, just seeing how he’s doing emotionally cause that’s sam for ya. cas tries to use the winchester f word but half way through the syllable opens up about how he wishes dean would just talk to him about his trauma and let down his walls
and sam tells him the same thing he told his mother: that if he cares about him, and he knows cas does, he’d try to get past that wall.
i’m a freakin endgame-positive shipper and i’m gobsmacked at how freaking obvious they’re being
One of those great seemingly throwaway but actually incredibly important moments is Cas telling the hunter where to find spell ingredients, right down to the exact room, drawer, and how it’s labeled. Combined with how Cas has slowly, the canon sneaking up on Cas, made Cas a fixture at the bunker. He not only lives there. He knows where stuff is. He doesn’t need to sleep, maybe he organized the drawers of spell ingredients himself, or maybe someone else did it, but Cas knows it like the back of his hand. He knows the bunker. It’s his home, because that’s where his family is.
Agreed. I love this.
Plus you know when Sam and Cas label things and do this kinda stuff they do it properly, working as a team and totally in sync in the way they work, whereas when they do it with Dean he’s the one who labels things “gross stuff” while they both roll their eyes at him and glance at each other with indulgent smiles.
clutches heart
Accurate. Also even if Sam organized the drawers, Cas’s detailed knowledge of where everything is is very telling. But yeah I think Sam and Cas maybe did it together or sleepless Cas, wandering the bunker at night, finds projects for himself. Also…Dean’s been missing for weeks and Cas and Sam could easily have been doing obsessive over-organizing as a coping tool for their worry. Sam wasn’t sleeping either just due to worry. Oh no, now I’m thinking about Sam and Cas finding each other wandering the bunker in the middle of the night, during times they weren’t each out there following a lead, both full of Dean worry and looking haunted at each other and did they join forces organizing stuff because it helped soothe them and maybe they talked about Dean.
2014!CASTIEL I think it had something to do with the other angels leaving. But when they bailed, my mojo just kind of— psshhew!—drained away. And now, you know, I’m practically human. I mean, Dean, I’m all but useless. Last year, broke my foot, laid up for two months.
I’m maybe stating the obvious, but I was rewatching The End, and I thought I’d share those lines again, because I saw a lot of posts about Cas’ lack of powers in the season 14 premiere, but what was said by Endverse!Cas in this scene probably explains why he’s weaker and weaker when it comes to his powers in the present context, knowing that there’s very few angels left.
Cas’ grace was already pretty damaged before, if I’m not wrong, so it kinda makes sense that he’s more affected than any other angel. And on top of that, he’s emotionally not at his best, it probably makes it worse.
You mean another callback to the exact same episode where this happened in Detroit too?
Where we now know there’s hardly any Angels left, indeed basically none on Earth (except Cas and Jo) as per Naomi’s ordering them back to Heaven, while again here and now Sam now says there’ll be no King of Hell as a direct reverse-mirror to his fulfilling his Lucifer destiny and all the demons running scared from him?!
Idk man, it’s not like Dabb loves callbacks, mirrors and knows his canon inside out or anything 😉
