Sam was to an extent an author-insert. I mean, he orchestrated the whole hunt, had a really meta encounter with his own double (characters usually interact with other characters’ mirrors) and then the bad guy literally got away from him so he blew a hole in the plot door to save the day. So that “ew” face was god-level commentary.

I actually commented on this even before the line people went nuts about at the end. The conversation went like so:
