Dean finds Cas exactly where he thought he’d be; sitting in his room, kneeling at his bedside, with a bowl and syringe on the mattress in front of him. His hands are shaking, and he curses at himself, hastily wiping at his eyes as he picks up the huge needle and puts it down again. Dean enters the room and sits down beside him, back up against the bed. 

“You know it’s not gonna work.”

Cas grits his teeth. “I can’t just sit here and—”

“So you’ll what,” Dean sighs, eyes slipping shut in his exhaustion. “Maybe buy him a few minutes of peace and then be human forever?”

“Yes.”

“Fine.”

“Dean, I have to do some—what?”

Green eyes flick open, meeting blue in a defeated stare. “Fine,” Dean repeats. “Do I wish you’d keep your grace for the next time you decide to do something stupid? No question. But if you wanna sacrifice it all to save the kid… I can’t tell you no. You do what you gotta do, Cas.”
