Hm—

DEAN: “Cas, I just talked to you on the phone.”

CAS: “No…no. Asmodeus had my phone. You’ve been talking to him.”

—I knew this was familiar.

Oh my god, Bucklemming. This duo, who wrote both 9×03 and 13×13, just threw us the insane dualism of these two mirror scenes here, right down to the clothing colours, context, position, set lighting/ambience, and reactions when Cas gives Sam and Dean a (self)revelation.

9×03: Dean finds out Cas had sex with April. (READ THIS) Nutshelling it: we all know that he reacts…not in a satisfied, fulfilled way, which warrants my confusion because wtf Cas is your platonic dudebro, Dean! Shouldn’t you be happy he snagged a chick? Unless you’re the one who wanted to sexually snag him first. Scratch that, snag him for years. Sam, on the other hand, isn’t particularly agitated (JEALOUS) like his brother is.

13×13: Dean finds out Cas wasn’t Cas but Asmodeus. He reacts like he did in 9×03. This time around, he’s more emotionally bothered by this serious discovery vs Sam’s composure. Sam’s shocked, yet his attention is still on Cas, while Dean doesn’t meet Cas’ eyes (his hand is shifty-tense; Dean’s processing, trying to absorb this information because WTF how was I not aware?? How did this go south so fast [pun semi-intended]?)

In both cases, A. Sam and Dean had no idea how bad the exact state of matters was—Gadreel needing human!Cas to leave the bunker vs an imminent AU war + Lucifer
B. Dean underwent personal realizations regarding his relationship with Cas/lost opportunities—kicking Cas out instead of sleeping with working things out with him vs easily believing Asmodeus instead of realizing he wasn’t Cas (realizing that he could have lost him once again). 

However, S9 was representative of things getting worse. S13 is representative of things getting better. We’re almost there. Dean’s almost there.

He’s LEARNING and GROWING. 

*TPTB nudges, winks more, more, more because it’s coming, building up, growing to a peak RELEASE*

Dean will let go of the very last remnants of his Old Self, and the final push will have him (also Cas) EXPRESS HIS FEELINGS and do something about it before he loses Cas (lose each other) again—-communicate before it’s ACTUALLY too late!!! To Dean, love is Cas STAYING. To Cas, love is Dean TALKING, and love is Dean understanding why Cas always goes away—let Cas know you love him, Dean. Then give him room to be independent, stretch his legs, pull back your control, and he’ll ABSOLUTELY stay for you.
