Hey! Regarding your (awesome) meta about Cas’s shame about loving Dean… wow! I for one have always dismissed that idea out of hand because I conflated it with shame towards Dean, and Cas is so relentlessly proud of Dean. But it actually makes so many things make SO MUCH sense. I have one other point to add, linking into what you said about Cas’s guard dropping when he’s human. Cas actually flirts with Dean when he’s human. He’s drunk, but maybe he’s also letting himself because it’s ‘allowed’?
You are bloody on point, my beautiful anonymous child! The scene you’re talking about definitely relates back to my meta and the whole “Cas is frightened to be with humans (Dean) because of his sacred oath as an angel” reading.
My friend, @olympiahell also brought this scene to my attention and we were discussing it only moments ago. The scene we’re talking about is from 9×09 where Cas is trying to work a case with the boys, he’s a little drunk, and obviously flirts with Dean while talking about ‘not choosing what you do, but having it choose you’.
The way he strokes his beer bottle, taps Dean’s, and winks at him like that just screams“i like you like the opposite of a bro.” And what does Dean do? Well flirt right back, obviously!
Honestly I have nothing to say about that smile – I have never seen Dean smile like that – at least not to Cas – and I just can’t! I can only equate it to positively responding to flirtation. I can only imagine this is what Dean is thinking during this scene “hot damn! Cas is flirting with me! And he’s drunk! And he’s human! This is so awesome! Think of all the possibilities now! Wait – I’m straight, right!? – What the fuck?!” I didn’t pick up on this as I was writing my post (somehow) as it slipped my mind. But it honestly fits in so well with what I was trying to convey in my post.
This look comes right after Cas mentions April, and Dean says: “the reaper you banged?” Now, they didn’t have to bring this up. They could have just left it at “Bartholomew wants to reverse Metatron’s spell, presumably to retake Heaven.” They didn’t need to add: “That’s according to April” – bringing her back into our minds and promptings us (and Dean) to think about what she and Cas did together. They didn’t have to give Cas and Dean this little exchange reminding us of Cas’s new found sex life. They didn’t have to make Dean pat Cas’s shoulder and say “not every hookup’s perfect” then grin like he’s thinking some very dirty thoughts (imagining Cas and April/him and Cas maybe?) – they didn’t have to make Sam clear his throat and excuse himself like an awkward third-wheel.
This was the first time we see Cas (to my knowledge) flirt so openly like this, with anyone. And when is it that we see him do this? When he’s HUMAN and slightly drunk. Allowing himself (as you said) to properly display who he is and how he feels. The alcohol is just more aid for him to become less emotionally stilted and open up. Here he is letting himself see humans (specifically Dean) as viable love interests and talk clearly about finding them attractive – which he had never had the opportunity to do before. It relates back to my “she’s human, I’m human – this is fiiiin” analysis. Only in this instance we have Dean in lieu of April.
Thank you so much, Anon, for bringing this up! And good eye as well, even I didn’t catch this and I fricken came up with the theory! If anyone else has any tidbits like this, please message me them!
