@tinkdw said: Hm… every single one of these is because Cas thinks he’s protecting dean (even from himself at times!) not that there’s a patten or anything 😉
This one’s not so much not being a good friend, but it’s sad nonetheless (from 5.21):
This one is from 5.22, after Dean loses Sam and is upset about it:
Here’s 6.06 when Cas is lying to Dean about how Sam got out of the hell box:
And here’s 6.12 after Sam gets his soul back and Dean’s upset that he’s still unconscious and asking Cas to tell him if he’s going to be all right:
Here’s one that’s a constant source of heartbreak, in 9.10 when Dean says he’s poison (to Sam) and doesn’t want to drag anyone down with him anymore. No words of comfort, no anything:
And in 10.03:
And then we have 12.19 after Cas has been ignoring Dean for weeks:
And stealing the Colt:
That’s what I can find. You can always check my Cas and Dean tag for other Cas with Dean gifs. Hope that helps.
This is a thing I really hope gets addressed in s13. I was sort of jumping for joy when Dean told Cas in 12.19 that he’s not their babysitter. Cas doing things to protect them always means lots of problems and hurt. And I understand why Cas does it. It’s part of his makeup, this need to protect. And it doesn’t help that their bond basically started with Dean begging Cas to help and Cas giving up everything in order to protect them. That’s when Dean started to think of him as a friend rather than an ally slash sometimes antagonist, anyway. So, it’s a pattern long set and one that needs to be broken so that all three of them are on a more equal footing where honesty rules the day.
I read somewhere that maybe it will help to be addressed with Castiel coming back and taking on a guardian-type role with Jack. But for Cas’ sake, even though it would be good for him to stop thinking of himself primarily as the Winchesters’ guardian, I don’t really want him to take up that role for Jack either. It’s time he found himself a place in the universe that doesn’t involve being anyone’s protector.
Cas (and Dean and Sam) accepting themselves, letting themselves be important and have what they want and not putting everyone else first as they’ve done repeatedly even when they specifically told by them not to? Healthy relationships on equal footing? We can dream! 😀
