Totally random story from my late teens, early 20s.

I had bought a scanner or something from a store that sold Apple computers back before Apple stores existed. Anyway the scanner was crappy and I brought it back and was like “wtf yo?”. I don’t even remember what they said or did (or didn’t do) but I got hella mad and threw a fit worthy of a middle aged white woman.

I had a friend with me and when we left she was like “you were just a total asshole.” And she was right and I knew it. I had worked retail, I knew it could suck and I still acted a fool.

I felt so bad we went to a donut shop and I bought a dozen donuts and then went back to the store, apologized, and gave the employees the donuts.

We hung out for a bit chatting with the employees, who I think we’re genuinely shocked I had come back to apologize.

Anyway the point is, don’t be a dick to retail workers, and if you do for some reason lose your shit (we all have bad days) there’s no reason you can’t apologize for your poor behavior.

Man I am telling you apologizing really does make a difference. I worked for U-Haul for almost 10 years and lemme tell you, people who are moving are stressed as hell and definitely not on their best behavior. I try to remember that when they’re yelling at me because the last person didn’t bring their truck back and now they’ve got nothin’. It’s not really about me, they know there’s nothing I can do about it.

But I can tell you I still remember the guy that called me on Monday to apologize, I can remember the lady that brought me donuts, the person that brought me an iced coffee. It made a HUGE difference in my stressed out work life. Just that little bit of kindness, even after they’d messed up- because I get it, I’ve been there too. We’ve all been there, and even if not having a fit is the best, apologizing is still loads better than pretending it never happened.
